Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 pilot's simulator probed by FBI

Malaysian investigators — with the help of the FBI — are trying to restore files deleted last month from the home flight simulator of the pilot aboard the missing Malaysia Airlines plane to see if they shed any light on the disappearance, officials said Wednesday.

Files containing records of simulations carried out on the program were deleted Feb. 3 from the device found in the home of the Malaysia Airlines pilot, Capt. Zaharie Ahmad Shah, Malaysian police chief Khalid Abu said.

Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein told a news conference that Zaharie is considered innocent until proven guilty of any wrongdoing, and that members of his family are cooperating in the investigation.

Malaysia Airlines Flight 370: Australia says possible objects in Indian Ocean

Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (CNN) -- Authorities have spotted two objects in the Indian Ocean that are possibly related to the search for missing Malaysia Airlines Flight 370, Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott said Thursday.

"New and credible information has come to light in relation to the search for Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 in the southern Indian Ocean," Abbott said in the the Australian House of Representatives in Canberra. "The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has received information based on satellite imagery of objects possibly related to the search.

"Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified," he said. "I can inform the House that a Royal Australian Air Force Orion has been diverted to attempt to locate the objects."

Three other planes will carry out a "more intensive follow-up search," he said.

Australian search teams have been at the forefront of the hunt for the missing plane in the remote southern Indian Ocean.

Lok Sabha polls 2014: Election Commission to announce schedule shortly

New Delhi: The Election Commission will announce the schedule for the forthcoming Lok Sabha polls at 10.30 am on Wednesday.

As per reports, general elections 2014 will be conducted in five to seven phases, with the first phase of polling to be held around April 10.

The dates would be declared by Chief Election Commissioner V S Sampath along with iElection Commissioners H S Brahma and Dr Nasim Zaidi at a press co Vigyan Bhavan. The venue has been changed from the usual Nirvachan Sadan owing to space constraints at the EC headquarters.

black money: Switzerland refuses to share information on bank account holders, Delhi mulls strong response

NEW DELHI: The Swiss authorities have told the Indian government they will not be able to share information on bank accounts without the consent of the account-holders. In a letter last month, Switzerland's finance minister also told her Indian counterpart that the 2011 Double Taxation Avoidance Agreement, under which India had sought information, applies prospectively, thus ruling out access to information about accounts opened before that date, said a senior official familiar with the letter's 

Reduce govt stake in Air India to 26 pct: Rakesh Mohan panel

The National Transport Development Policy Committee (NTDPC) led by former deputy governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Rakesh Mohan, has recommended that the government reduce its stake in Air India to 26 per cent over five years.
The committee was constituted in 2010 and comprised representatives from government ministries involved in transportation and the private sector.
In its three-volume report, which was released by Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Saturday, the committee has said it does not see any reason for the government to continue with its exclusive ownership in the national carrier.
“A plan for progressive disinvestment of the government’s stake in Air India over a period of three to five years, based on a phased scheme with defined milestone, should be achieved,” the report said.

India won’t intervene to check WhatsApp voice

When Bharti Airtel CEO Gopal Vittal says the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) needs to regulate the entry of players like WhatsApp — scheduled to launch a voice call service later this year for its 417 million subscribers, 25 million of whom are in India — you know the industry is seriously worried.
More so since, as Vittal’s predecessor Sanjay Kapoor puts it, voice will soon be just another app. Translated, voice revenues as a share of mobile revenues will fall to mature market levels of around 50% in a few years, down from 85% today.
The fall could be even faster given the speed at which smart phones are being sold — from 7.4% of the market a year ago, they account for 17% today. That, and the entry of Reliance Jio, scheduled later in the year, where the focus will be on data-driven plans, is hastening the pace of change.
It’s not as if telecom companies haven’t seen the writing on the wall, or weren’t preparing for it. Short message service or SMS has been a lucrative source of revenue — actually boosting the bottom line, considering the costs of providing them are negligible, and comprised 12% of profit for Bharti Airtel in 2009-10. In Q3FY14, SMS revenues were down to a mere 6% of top line while data, which made an entry in FY12, comprised 10.3% of Q3FY14 revenues — the share was up 60% over FY13.
Which is why, as Idea Cellular’s managing director Himanshu Kapania points out, telcos have bid so aggressively in the just-concluded auctions for data spectrum in February. Idea surprised most when it bid R3,705 crore to buy 900 MHz spectrum in Delhi, ideally suited for data services given its excellent in-building penetration. If even a value-player like Idea was prepared to splurge on 900 MHz, it is clear the data play is getting serious.
