Profile
As Secretary General of the 193-member international organization, South
Korean Ban has helped strengthened the UN's peacekeeping efforts,
philanthropic ventures and worldwide hunger initiatives. Now in his
second term, the measured and conservative Ban will head up the
organization through 2016. Within the UN itself, the Secretary-General
has increased the number of women in senior management positions
by more than 40% - the highest level in the organization's history. In
July 2013, Ban derecognized the UN's staff unions, which represent
65,000 employees. Ban recently declared the use of poison sarin gas in
Syria a war crime.
