Now eight years into his lifelong tenure as the U.S. Supreme Court's top
judge, he's successfully moved the court in a conservation direction.
Yet this year the court surprised (to Roberts dissent) in the U.S. vs.
Windsor case, also known as the Defense of Marriage Act, striking down
the controversial federal law preventing same-sex married couples from
being recognized as legal spouses. The court's
new term, which started in October, will see crucial cases involving
campaign finance, state-sanctioned prayer, and affirmative action.
